Compiling DAQKits 3.0 on my laptop

While on a trip to CERN, I wanted to do more than just sit in meetings learning about CMS, so with the help of Christoph Schwick I grabbed DAQkits from the web and tried to compile it on my laptop. Note that currently I am running Mandrake 10.1 with a 2.6 kernel:

 
[nahn@bezor DAQkit]# uname -a
Linux bezor 2.6.8.1-12mdk #1 Fri Oct 1 12:53:41 CEST 2004 i686 Mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+ unknown GNU/Linux

and a different gcc compiler

[nahn@bezor DAQkit]# gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.4.1 (Mandrakelinux 10.1 3.4.1-4mdk)

and probably there are some other differences between the recommended system based on CERN Scientific Linux 3 and my system, but I thought it might be good to look and see what happens when an upgrade is requested/required.
